In 2000, SFWSS started the "Legal Information and Advocacy Program" with one advocate. .

In 2007, our program statistics revealed that 65% of the women accessing the program were seeking legal services in Punjabi. As funding avenues became available, the legal program expanded to hire a South Asian Legal Educator.

The South Asian Legal Educator has become well-established in the community, helping to provide legal information and education on family law, and poverty law issues in Punjabi. We offer outreach from 2 Sikh temples in Surrey, and from our satellite office in Cloverdale.

Now in our 9th year, we operate with 2 advocates and 1 South Asian Legal Educator.

It's clear. The program has been very well received in the community - 634 families accessed our services in 2008 alone.

South Fraser Legal is the next step.

South Fraser Legal opened on November 4th, 2009. Our mandate is to improve access to justice by providing information and resources for a range of legal issues.

And South Fraser Legal is conveniently located for clients within Surrey, Delta, and White Rock, as well as those travelling from Langley, Coquitlam, and surrounding communities, with easy accessibility to public transit services.

Why The Community Needs South Fraser Legal Now

Many of the clients entering our current program are dealing with complex issues which are not limited to family law. In fact, we're seeing that most require a broader continuum of legal services than those we've been able to provide up till now.

After meeting with local community agencies, we've determined that our community’s legal needs can be better met by establishing a more centralized location where those in need can easily access multiple legal resources and services - all under one roof.

Census reports confirm that the largest immigrant population in Surrey is comprised of South Asian families. In our new location, SFL services will also be made available in Punjabi and Hindi.
