$138 Really Works!
$138 will cover the costs to assist one client in a year.
That can make the difference for a local family needing the kind of help only South Fraser Legal provides.
Your $138 works hard for a client: everything from basic legal information, to assistance with Supreme Court documentation, for court/lawyer accompaniment, or help in court preparation.
Your $138 works for our clients requiring on-going support - complicated legal issues have kept their files open and active for years. With recent cuts to legal aid coverage, some face the prospect where they can no longer qualify for legal aid. Or their lawyer’s hours are already ‘maxed out’ before the case finishes in court.
Your $138 will work for clients who are left unrepresented, immersed in a legal system they are unable to navigate by themselves. For them, our free legal services provide the only assistance available.
South Fraser Legal will provide advocacy in family law as well as assistance in poverty law and immigration issues. Maybe for your own family. Or your neighbour's.
We want you to know what $138 can really do.
Our Legal Educator is already working with many seniors at local Sikh temples, including this 57 year old South Asian woman, a new immigrant from India:
“I moved to Canada from India anticipating a better qualify of life with family but soon after my arrival was told I could no longer live at home. I had no living accommodations and was not allowed to take any of my belongings, identification, or immigration papers when I left. I took refuge at the local Sikh temple but could not seek any social or government assistance as I had no identification to verify my identity or legal status in Canada. I asked for assistance from the Legal Educator and she helped me reapply for my identification and immigration documents. She also assisted me with housing accommodations through the Ministry of Social Housing and Development. I am now living independently with stable financial support and feel hopeful about my future instead of the hopelessness that dawned months ago. The Legal Educator continues to assist me with any on-going issues with the Ministry of Social Housing and Development”.
Your donation of $138 will help a member of our community find necessary legal information to assist a loved one. One father provides the following story:
“My daughter began disclosing that her partner was physically abusive and needed to leave him. I feared for her safety and that of my grandchildren, but I did not know how to support them. I approached an advocate from South Fraser Women’s Services after hearing about the legal program on the local radio. The advocate provided me with information about protection orders and the court process. I connected the advocate to my daughter who was able to assist her in applying for legal aid and seeking protection orders after separation. My daughter has applied for custody and child support for the children and the advocate continues to accompany my daughter to any court related appointments”.
A single contribution of $138 enables South Fraser Legal to provide direct services to one person in our community for a year, and make a real difference in family, poverty, or immigration issues.
